Chapter 23

“We’re All Going to Get Wet”

May 12, 2127

Day 225

Jacks Company

The seven squad leaders, Veronika from the HQ squad was overseeing the food line, approached Cassidy and Pickford as a group while the two were eating their pasta. They had one extra person with them, Baylee McMahon. The eight girls took seats in a semi-circle around the pair who regarded them expectantly. The two leaders already knew more or less what the squad leaders were going to say. Winter Summerfield served as the group’s spokesperson and said, “Commander, Gunnery Sergeant, we have to try to rescue those people; tonight. There may not be another chance.”

“We thought you might say that,” Rick replied evenly. “You have an idea I suppose.”

“Yes, Commander,” Winter said. “This one here,” she pointed to Baylee, “has been using her noodle for something besides day dreamin’ about Sergeant Jacques.”

“Hey!” Baylee protested with a grin as a blush crept over her face not disputing Winter’s assertion.

“Like I said,” the squad leader grinned as she glanced back at Baylee, “she’s got an idea we talked over, and we talked to a couple of others who would be a help.”

Cassidy said, “You realize that whatever the plan is we’re liable to lose people, and maybe without saving anyone.”

“Ja, ja, we know that. What’s new about that?” Emilie Paulus asked. “We have to at least try. And who knows if one of our parents is down there.”

“We haven’t seen as many prisoners as we’ve heard were in the larger group that split off from the one we rescued a few nights ago,” Molly Pickford pointed out. “There could be more out there.”

Stormy James said, “I guess we can only try to save the ones we can get to even if there might be more out there someplace.”

Molly and Rick looked at each other thoughtfully for several seconds then Molly said, “Let’s hear what you’ve got.”

Baylee said, “Okay, if we use the zodiacs…”

The command group sat in a corner discussing the proposed operation while the rain continued to drum on the tent top although less loudly than earlier. “What do you think?” Rick asked the others, Gabi Tomei, Maya Scott, Jillian Kelly and David Choo. Some of the newcomers were also listening.

“Very risky but I think there’s a chance it could work as long as it’s dark enough,” Kelly said. “It has to be dark enough they can’t see the boats on the way.”

“Can we really do this without losing anyone?” a somewhat distressed Maya Scott asked rhetorically. She already knew the answer but wanted it said out loud.

“There are no sure things here,” Rick answered with a worried frown.

“There are several points along the way where we can stop the operation, either to pause it or scrub it,” Molly told them.

“Let’s take it to the company and see what other ideas they might have,” Rick said.

The day wore on with the rain pouring down hard most of the time. Watchers tried to keep the Raagaa camp and the captives under observation at all times using the infrared function on their field glasses.
